I believe a lot of that has to do with the change in exemptions that allows more U.S. players to compete, but it's still amazing to see the British Open completely dominated by Yanks.
It does not amaze me as most British players that are still playing on the European Tour are getting too used to playing the fairly simple ,mostly "new" courses around the world (China, Indonesia, Thailand and every where else the Euro tour seems to end up around the world) and as such don,t seem to be able to turn it on when it comes to "Our Major"
Look at how well the Texan players have done in the past, Justin Leonard( 1 win and 1 very close) and Todd Hamilton, they learn,t their trades on windy, dry courses and have not forgotten how to do it ( unlike our boys )
