If you find yourself in the Chicago area there is a brand new course in Hammond, IN called Lost Marsh. It is VERY challenging, and appealing to the eye. It only costs about $50 to play, too. I have also played Coyote Crossing, Purgatory, and the Brickyard. I had very nice experiences at all of them. In South Bend, Blackthorne is a good option. I've heard the course at Notre Dame is good, but I have yet to play there.
