The longer shafted fairway wood will generally hit the ball farther, because it will have a higher club head speed at impact. The other part of your question is too difficult to answer, since "average golfer" is hard to define. You'll have to hit the clubs yourself to determine YOUR average distance. That's the only thing that really matters.
