Arcadia Bluffs on Lake Michigan is the only really sweet place I've played. It's across the lake from Whistling Straits, with the same sort of natural terrain though the dunes. Golf Digest had it ranked in its top 10 US public courses. I played there this past summer for $100 twilight. Absolutely gorgeous and while challenging, very playable for anyone.
