You want the shaft to bend and then straighten out just before impact. This is where a lot of power comes from. Think of it as "Spring Back". You bend the shaft, and it stores up energy, then the shaft "kick's back into the ball. and that stored energy is released into the ball. If the timing is correct, you hit the ball a lot farther. That why you want to shaft to bend.
If the shaft is too stiff, you can't make it bend enough, and you lose power. It's that simple.
