Re: Fedex Cup Playoffs: A success or not?

I voted yes but I'm not sure what defines the success. I think it has generated interest in some otherwise uninteresting tournaments.

I really don't understand what they're trying to accomplish though outside of just generating additional revenue through viewers.

Playoffs in other sports finally match up teams in different divisions to determine the overall champion. That doesn't work with golf since they're playing with each other all year long. So we already know who the best is. This is like conference championships in NCAA basketball -- you commonly see two stats (who the regular season champion was and who won the tourney). Most people care more about regular season.

The fact that it's a 4 week event even contradicts this purpose. The point of drawing it out would be to reduce the fluke factor. We already have that through an entire year of playing -- why try to do it again on a limited scale. Just contradictory in my opinion and they don't understand what they're trying to accomplish outside of ratings.

If they want to provide a little late season enjoyment to viewers and players who had a good year then cut the field drastically (major winners and top 15 money list) and play 1 weekend for a huge prize. Maybe single elimination match play even. It works for March Madness.
