The position of the club you have described almost corresponds to the Leadbetter swing theory. The shaft tilting with a right angle between your arm and the club, but on plane and not vertical to the ground (If I have understood you correctly). I personally feel that the level of wrist hinge or set he calls for is extreme.

He feels that the wrist should be pretty much in position at half way back. I think that every body part should be in sync, gradually load, and be complete at the same time: the top of the swing.

It seems unnatural to position your arms and wrist, and then position your upper body. I like to keep everything working together and in sync in one piece.

This drill helps your brain "feel" positions in your backswing that will give you a square clubface and good plane.

Good observation!
