Forgive me if it seems like I am calling you out, here, but I think that this is an awfully naive view of the current state of affairs.
Are you telling me that there isn't some player out there who is thinking that if they could just hit drives 20 yards further, they could make it through Q-School? Or stay in the top 125 in the money list to keep their card? I agree it is probably not any of the top players, I suspect they have too much to lose if their reputations became tarnished. But, Joe Nobody deep in the middle of the money list probably has almost nothing to lose and a lot to gain by using. 125th on the PGA TOUR money list and being in the middle of the pack of the Nationwide tour is a significant amount of money.
And besides, if they don't test, it is an implicit OK from the tours to use. And that isn't right in any way, shape or form.
Sure, it's nice to invoke the old sayings about how golf is a gentleman's game, and they call penalties on themselves, etc., etc. If mankind was completely honorable at all times, I could agree with you. But, I am sorry, one does not become more honorable just because you are playing golf. And, if you don't think that someone out there is seeking an edge however they can, I think that you are pretty naive about the current state of mankind. With the amount of money available just to play a game, and no testing until recently -- and for that matter a large amount of performance enhancers undetectable -- there are going to be some players using. Cheaters cross all lines, and as long as there is significant amounts of money on the line, there will be cheaters in golf, too.
George O'Grady's quote is funny -- and it probably reflects the attitude of the average casual fan -- but, it does matter to other people too. Look, if someone made it through Q-School using performance enhancers taking that last spot that would have been yours, don't you think that you'd care about that? I know I sure would. Testing has to be performed at all levels.
