Re: Hitting the ball first
Try a change in feelings. Rather than concentrating on where the head of the club should be hitting -- and consequently concentrating on controlling the head, try concentrating on feeling the position of the hands at impact. Namely, try concentrating on getting the hands ahead of the ball at impact. Learn to trust that the club will come around and impact the ball. With the hands ahead of the ball, your swing bottom will almost have to move to the ball or in front of the ball. Bascially, do not think about the club, think about your hands. Like b-n-r said, start with chips, heck you can even start with putts. In every case, the goal is to feel the position of the hands ahead of the ball. Try that and see if that doesn't help some.
