It's tough to know where the balance lies today, but excerpts of his biography talked about several times when he needed to make the cut in the tournament he was playing in so he could pay off his gambling debt. As in, he had to make the cut to get a paycheck, otherwise the people he owed money to might change into "we break knees" mode. So, there have been times his balance has been negative.
