Re: John Daly is a pile
There was a story around a while back, don't know how true it was...
JD passed by the fitness trailer one day and saw Tiger working out. JD tells Tiger that he's going for a beer and asks if he'd care to join him. Tiger declines, saying he needs to stay there and finish his workout. JD chides him for not hanging out enough, especially with all his talent, to which Tiger replies "John, if I had as much natural talent as you, I wouldn't have to work so hard!"
Daly's talent is unmistakable. You don't win 2 majors just falling off the truck. The thing that's amazing is he's not even working at it. If he ever took himself seriously, he might have been that guy all this time that Tiger had to stare down. Instead, he made countless bad decisions that have basically cost him the opportunity to be one of the great champions of his time. He'll probably say he never cared for the fame and glory, but that's mostly a cop out from fear of success. As much as he likes to give to others, being more successful by working just a bit harder would give him more opportunity for charitable work.
What I do frown on is the "Michelle Wie"-ing of John Daly; that is giving him exemptions just because he's a gate draw. He's not reliable to show up for pro-ams or tourney days, and that just takes the spot from a young eager up and comer. How many times has he withdrawn from a tournament, and that guy who was the next alternate on the list wanted to strangle him?
I'd say it's sad what's happened to him, and it would be if it didn't repeat itself time and time again. Now, it's not sad, it's actually disgusting and disappointing.
