Re: John Daly is a pile
I went to the Zurich Classic yesterday and saw some of the Big John phemomenon. Here's where things get a bit problematic - there were quite a few kids there wearing John Daly apparel. He's very good and popular with the kids. Don't know if it's just the colorful lion logo, or his everyman style and the fact that he seems to be infinitely approachable, but there were a lot of John Daly autographs, t-shirts, hats, etc on youths. Now, we know better than to allow our kids to have too much idol worship of anyone, and I don't even think JD himself would consider himself a role model. But there is a line to walk here - he's good with the kids and that's not a bad thing. As long as the kids understand that you shouldn't live the life he's lived (or try to copy his swing!) and that he, like all adults, comes with flaws, its he's not a bad man. I have often questioned his invites to tournaments - he withdraws a lot and hasn't played enough on the weekends. But seeing the kids with all the Daly paraphernalia, maybe some of the sponsors have got it right...
