It sounds like you are hitting the ball directly on the target line and making contact with an open club face. If you are releasing your hands properly the club face would be square at impact or possibly a little closed if using a shaft too weak for your swing speed. In my experience, too weak a shaft usually means high balls either straight or hooked. Or then again, that could be just me.
