Is setup with the driver really that important?

I tried something yesterday. I have been pulling the driver, slicing in insane mannors, I call it my "killer slice" and was sick and tired of it.

My iron shots where terrible and I tried something.
Took my normal backswing and brought the club back like I normally would but stopped 2-3 feet before the club is supposed to hit the ball.

Guess what. The club was outside the line of the golfball. The only way back is to straighten up of manipulate the club with the hands.

So I did the easiest fix. Get further away from the golfball at address. Did the same test again. Now the club was coming more towards the ball in the downswing. Did some shots with this technique and I was able to not worry about hitting the ball. Shots where alot better and straighter. Less pulling effect, straighter fligth and better contact.

Tried the same with the driver. Also made sure my head was more behind the ball here than with irons so I could swing up on it.

I only tried 3-4 shots, but I generally hit the ball better and this one shot was simply amazing.
It took off and cleared the 140 yard maximum yardage on my range with no effort at all.
The range is a forrest range and only 140 yard long so if you hit it further than 140 it goes straight into the woods.

This ball looked like it never was going to land and had tremendous speed and very nice angle.

I didn't have to worry about pulling or doing anything with my arms to make contact with the driver and it felt awesome. Is this a legitimate fix?

I felt I stood very far away from the ball but it made me able to just sweep the heck out of the driver. I also lost a little balance forwards but that was only a result of overdoing the distance I think.

I have also been shanking my irons from time to time and pulling alot of shots. Doesn't it seem like distance and proper shoulder alignment could fix quite a bit here?

Sorry the long post, I'm just so exited
