I am trying to do exactly what you are talking about, and yes, it feels very strange, as you're not casting as usual... every good ball-striker creates clubhead lag. Bringing the club straight down and not releasing it feels much different than your previous swing, in which you probably just swung with your arms and, although it felt like you were releasing at the end, you were releasing even at the top.
