When you are thinking OUCH!!! you cant think about much else. he bites his tounge because it is hard for observers to tell what he is doing but he does this as a masochistic way to get his mind off of negative golf thoughts. Who knows, maybe when people are not watching he might whack himself in the shin with a wedge to get his mind off of bad swing thoughts
