What's the deal with the hyper-sensitive "bad language" policy here?
Words like "*******" and "****" have been deleted.
I don't have a problem with the policy...I'm just curious as to why it's so extreme.
Thanks/.
Ive been reported MANY times for some words I couldnt believe....I know this is supposed to be family friendly, but if you cant express yourself, not even saying anything bad, is a bit much.....oh well

Reason: language in quote...don't endorse this behavior
If you read the rules, and the stickies at the top of each forum, you would know why. As for a need to "express yourself", there are plenty of other words in the english language that work just as well as what you think of as small swears.

I read the sticky and the forum guidelines when I first joined. I understand the policies. My question is WHY is it so extreme?
I mean, the owner of these forums doesn't even come on here. And some of the words I've had edited I didn't even realize could be considered "swears" or "crude".
The same reasons that are listed under "suitable content" would also apply to the language policy:

Suitable Content
It seems to be widely accepted on many forums nowaday that "if it's on TV, it's ok to post it." That is not so here. Let's just please leave the crude jokes and inappropriate comments on television. We have many teenage and pre-teen members on the site, so try to treat your posting on here as though your young, impressionable son or daughter could read it and bring it up at the dinner table tomorrow. A big benefit of this policy is that without the garbage humor, it forces folks to be more creative if they want to be funny. More intelligent posting is always a good thing in our minds.
I guess you could say...we know everyone here is better than that, so we hold the standards higher.

The real question is why does it bother you so much? Starting a thread about the policy and calling it extreme is complaining. Another good question would be why do you want it differently?

What does that have to do with anything? You wouldn't even know that if we hadn't volunteered the info.

Many other places would allow some of the words we edit here. I'm of the opinion that our language policy enhances the ambience here at GR. It forces people to use their brains to express themselves instead of mindlessly using vulgarity to force a point.
I for one really appreciate GR's language policy and anti-rudeness policy. There are so few places in the world today where you can go for decent, civil converstation. Coming to Golf Rewind is always a pleasure.
The other thing is: Besides being offensive to many, the prohibited language in question is so unimaginative. I think GR posts on the whole make for better reading than the posts on (say) ESPN's golf board.
I've been posting here for a little while now and just noticed the policy yesterday (guess that says something about my posting). I respect the rules of the forum but since this topic is here I might as well mention it. I agree with the list but there's one word I can't understand being censored. It starts with an S and you do it when you drink something. The only way I see that word being negative is if it's used as a sexual reference or something like that. I had a VERY word conscious mother growing up and that one was never a "bad" word, so I"m curious why that one is a no-no. Oh well, this a Very good forum and I guess every place has its quirks.

It falls into the "unimaginative" lot too. There are certainly other ways to say something was less than ideal...like the one I just mentioned.
You call it a quirk...we call it the reason we're still here.

Where do you think that term originated? You don't really think that when someone says "That s!" that they mean "That s Coke!" do you? Same thing with the word you use when you install a light bulb...when someone says "I ed up" you don't really think they mean "I rotated clockwise up" do you? We've had several members use the word that way, get edited, and then get mad because the edit made it look like they posted something dirty...which leads one to believe that if it's that easily misconstrued with the *s present then it probably shouldn't have been used in that context in the first place. I think I can safely speak for the moderators in saying we really appreciate members that not only adhere to the language (and other) rules we enforce here, they are grateful for them...by the same token, we get really really tired of constantly being challenged on it, constantly having to edit repeat offenders who just don't seem to get it...and not only that, we have to familiarize ourselves with vulgarities from other cultures which, I'm happy to say, don't surface very often, thank goodness.
What if you reply to a thread with a humorous, intelligent response that can be construed as "vulgar?" I had an entire post deleted that took a while to construct. I think it was one of those male crotch dilemnas that was constructed with the utmost respect, and that all males can relate to. It was deleted by the mods. I thought it was extreme, namely because it wasn't racial, distasteful, condesending, bitter, or demeaning in any way, shape, or form- just plain relatable humor.
It didn't bother me PIUIG, one of the reasons I frequent GR is because of their strict language policy. Sometimes you have to be extreme to get something done- an inch can mean a mile to some. Maybe this is the reasoning. I like it. It also exposes in a greater sense the trash that exists out there. GR is a breath of fresh air due to their policies.
