Where to ski in the US/Canada?

Hi there guys,

Last year I went skiing in Whistler Canada, my first ski attempt and i loved it so want to go back to that part of the world again this winter. However, I dont really know where and being in the UK, some of the gems may be hidden from me without someone pointing them out.

One place possible is Lake louise where parents have been before and loved. It is good because it is quiet, I have no real care for a hustling bustling nightlife, so long as there is a good 5* hotel with a reasonable selection of eating, im going to be happy as Larry. So has anyone got any alternative suggestions (of course given we are beginners, so icy snow wouldnt be good)? Ski in ski out would be nice but not essential, really the only vital thing is that there is a quality hotel and a reasonable number of beginner/intermediate slopes. On my internet searches, most places are great except for the hotel part in that they are limited to smallish 4* or chalet types....

thanks for any help!

Hey Buns, I am from Alberta Canada .. been skiing a few times to Banff and Lake Louise. Any of the Fairmont Properties like the Chateau Lake Louise would probably be what you are looking for. Most other hotels in Lake Louise are not as large and not nearly as nice. if you have any questions please feel free to private message me, and I will find out the answer from someone who has stayed there first hand, as a lot of my friends and family have been there.

Cheers

Jay

My parents have been to lake louise on a couple of occasions and I was at the chateau in whistler this year so we know the Fairmonts are nice. We just havent really found many resorts with hotels on a comparable level so was really wondering if anyone knows better.....

I love Steamboat. No pretenciousness. Just good skiing and a good ski town.

Utah my friend, Utah. There is a reason the license plate says "Greatest Snow on Earth". Try Park City. Many places to eat and stay. You have Deer Valley, Park City, and The Canyons within 10 minutes of each other.

DITTO THAT!! The best skiing in the USA, IMO is in Utah, especially Snowbird, Alta. 2nd place to Colorado (Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper, Steamboat, Purgatory, etc. etc.)

Little village, excellent hotels, tons of powder and terrain - Big White in Kelowna, B.C. I lived there for two years, and it's fantastic. Inexpensive.

A short primer on Utah laws. Enjoy

Getting a drink in Utah isn't as difficult as what you might have heard. Park City makes it even easier with more alcoholic beverage businesses per capita than any other place in the state. So whether you're looking for a local brew or just a glass of wine, you won't be left high and dry.

Below is some specific information about getting a drink during your vacation.
Beer
You can purchase 3.2% beer at the grocery and convenience stores. 3.2% beer is also served in restaurants that only have beer licenses. Full-strength beer is for sale at state liquor stores (see addresses below) and is sold in private clubs and restaurants with liquor licenses.

Wine
Wine is served in restaurants and private clubs and can be purchased at the state liquor stores.

Liquor
You can buy liquor at state liquor stores and purchase it by the drink in most restaurants (if you order food) and all private clubs (without ordering food).

State Liquor Store Locations In Park City
Remember: Liquor stores are closed on Sundays, state & federal holidays.

1901 Sidewinder Dr.
Prospector Square
This is the largest liquor store in Park City with one of the best wine selections in Utah.
Hours are 10am-8pm Mon - Sat.
649-7254

524 Main Street
Hours are 11am-10pm. Mon. - Sat.
649-3293

Kimball Plaza at Kimball Junction
Hours are 11am-7pm. Mon. - Sat.
658-0890

Private Club Membership
Visitors (21 and over) may purchase a temporary membership to any private club for $4, enabling them to enter and consume alcoholic beverages. The visitors' card is valid for three weeks from the date of purchase, and allows the visitor and up to 7 guests to use the club. Memberships must be purchased from each private club you visit. Alternatively, a member can sponsor a guest provided that there is a pre-existing relationship between guest and sponsor. The sponsor is required to remain in the club while the sponsored guest is present.

Brown Bagging/Unfinished Wine
Subject to the discretion of the establishment, patrons may pay a corkage fee allowing them to bring in their own bottled wine to licensed restaurants and private clubs for on premise consumption. Patrons may carry out unfinished wine from a restaurant or private club provided that the bottle has been re-corked.

Basic Utah Liquor Licenses
Full liquor service is available in licensed restaurants, banquet and catering facilities, airport lounges, and private clubs. Patrons may order liquor by the drink, wine by the glass or bottle, and beer in bottles, cans and on draft. Packaged liquor, wine, and heavy beer (over 3.2%) are available in State Liquor Stores.

In restaurants with full service liquor licenses, liquor, wine and heavy beer (over 3.2%) may be served from noon to midnight. Beer (3.2%) is available from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Patrons must be dining in the restaurant in order to be served an alcoholic beverage. Patrons may be served at their table or in a waiting area.

In restaurants with limited service liquor licenses, wine, and heavy beer (over 3.2%) may be served from noon to midnight. Beer (3.2%) is available from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Limited restaurant licenses may not sell distilled spirits.

I used to be an avid skier, 40-50 times a season. I live in the Pacific Northwest and have been to Whistler many times. I would recommend the Lake Tahoe area. There are about 7 or 8 great resorts within 30 minutes of Tahoe. Heavenly, Kirkwood, Squaw, Sierra Ski ranch just to name a few. My personal fav is Heavenly.

Hey, I'm a native of Colorado, and even though I don't ski myself, I have heard of quite a few choice stops. Hit Copper Mountain. You won't be disappointed. You must also go to Vail and Steamboat. Those two are some of the best. Stop in the info centers in Colorado. They can give tons on packets on skiing.
