Ah, wanted to mention that the clubmaker said the gap that's causing the lack of snugness is not big enough for a shim... and then Taylor Made said to certainly not use a shim... just in case that helps any diognosis here..
B. Right, Make sure you remove the old epoxy from the clubhead. This can be done with emery cloth or sandpaper. I use a drill with a slotted bit to roll the emery cloth around. You must also drill out the old epoxy from the tip of the shaft. Careful here not to drill into the side of the shaft. This will let air escape during installation. Scrape the old epoxy off the shaft tip. Mix the 24 hour epoxy (must be equal parts of resin and hardener) with shafting beads (it doesn't require a lot). I usually fill the hosel to the top. Put a little around shaft tip and turn shaft while inserting into the head. Align shaft and make sure head and ferrule are flush. Clean all epoxy with paper towels and set 24 hours until cured. I purchase my shafting beads and Fuzor epoxy from Leaderboardgolf.com.
B.Right, Actually if the fit is too tight (not enough clearance), the shaft tends to push the epoxy away from the hosel wall. This will also cause the shaft to loosen during use. I've had to repair a bunch with this problem.
dondimond, thanks for the tips.... I should say that I'm not doing the work myself, but I do know that the clubmaker hasn't been filling the hosel with epoxy to the top... is that what you meant? I brought it to another repair shop, so I'm going to get a second person's handiwork and see if that helps. funny though, this guy said that he would never use shafting beads, and that a shim was the way to go... big surprise, everyone's different.
B.Right, I'm not there to look at the clearance/fit so I'm at a disadvantage here. If your clubmaker is suggesting a shim, maybe it's too loose of a fit for shafting beads only. I know a lot of clubmakers vary on the amount of epoxy down the hossel. I fellow clubmaker once told me he filled the epoxy to the top and has never had a head fly off. Hard to beat success!
