Red face How & where to start

Hey guys,
I would love to start making my own clubs. I have thought about it many times. But how do I start? What equipment is absolutely necessary for a beginner? I've never done this before because I would know where to begin. How do the clubs you make compare to the brand names? Can you get brand heads and shafts from somewhere?

Any info would be appreciated.

I think Golfsmith's offer classes. golfsmith.com I didn't really look at the website, but there is a ph#.

I know of other teaching aids that are out there, wouldn't know where to look. I've though of doing the same thing. Maybe hit up some of the local custom builders in your area to get some free advice--if they're willing!

Golfsmiths class is somewhere between $50 and $100. They give you components to make two clubs, 3-wood and 5 iron, and instruct you how to do it.

I have two friends that have taken the class, and both make a lot of clubs and iron sets for people.

It can be dangerous(to your checkbook). One friend buys a ton of components just to try out new shafts and heads.

The 4 hour Golfsmith club making class runs $25. You make 2 clubs and get to keep them and are presented with a $25 gift card for Golfsmith upon completion. My friend and I are going next month to this course. They also offer 3 different courses in Texas. "Complete training" is a 5 day course for $435. "Master Craftsman" is a 4 day course for $475 and "Advanced Clubmaking" is a 5 day course for $575 that includes complete club fitting...golfworks.com also offers courses at their headquarters, I think that is Ohio.

I called my local Golfsmith store and they told me that their next class isn't until September and that they usually have them every other Sunday. The cost is still 25 dollars, you build 2 clubs, although I forget which 2 clubs they are(I think it's a wedge and a 5 iron), and you get a 25 dollar gift card. That's not a bad deal.
