A buddy of mine has an older Big Bertha driver that we had the shaft pulled from to go into a Callaway 3 wood. The driver was a bore through, and the tip of the shaft was pretty manlged when it was pulled. It looks like the first 1.5 inches of the shaft will need to be cut off in order to re-use this shaft. Is this normal when pulling shafts out of bore through heads? We are thinking of cutting off the damaged tip portion, adding 1/2 inch to the butt, and putting this shaft in a 3 wood. If it plays a bit stiffer that would actually be a good thing. Would this work or this a horrible idea? All I'm trying to do here is get him a 3 wood ASAP for as cheap as possible until his new one arrives. This little project is only going to cost me $2 for a new grip and $9 in labor, so no big deal. Any big issues with doing this?
No big issues with this. It will play a bit stiffer, but many new shafts require no tip trimming if used in a driver, do require a tip trim if put in a fairway wood.
Why are you adding a 1/2 inch to the butt? Normally the 3 wood is a 1/2 inch shorter than the driver and the 5 wood is a 1/2 inch shorter than the 3 wood. The 7 and 9 woods are usually the same length as the 5 wood.

The shaft measures 43 right now after being pulled, about 1 inch will need to be cut off the tip, so I *think* it will need 1/2 added to the butt after its installed to play at 42.5 which is what he wants.
