Can anyone tell me what the effect a jumbo size grip could have on a club's performance?
I realize it may add a little swingweight. And how would that extra swingweight effect the club as opposed to additional swingweight in the head, if any?
And I've heard that oversize grips can take the hands more out of the swing, thus reducing hook spin. Any truth here? And if so, would this only be helpful if you have large hands?
Typically, I think your hand size should determine the size grip you should use. One exception is golfers who have arthritis or hand problems. Sometimes the larger grips are more comfortable. If you try a jumbo, just put it one one club first to test it out.
Your hand size should determine the grip size. However, I think oversize grips tend to promote a fade, while undersized grips could promote more of a draw.
Actually, the jumbo size grips, being heavier than standard, will decrease the swingweight of the club. I'm not sure if I remember correctly but it seems that every four grams of weight will change swingweight by one point either up or down relative to the weight of the grip. Hope this helps.

I have jumbo's on my clubs, and I like them. I have a regular grip on my driver, but If I play with regular grips on my irons, I have a couple of fingers that just ache. Probably some early signs of arthritis from too many years of volleyball.
I'm not sure of the effect on swingweight, but a clubbuilder might suggest it throws-off the club balance. I don't think you would want jumbo's on a graphite shaft, but I think with steel shafts, the difference is negligible.
I have heard that a bigger grip wil promote a fade, due to hands not getting through the ball. So, if you have a prominant hook or draw, bigger would not further promote the issue, but may alleviate it, to some degree.
I'm no expert, jmho.

i just regriped all my clubs and I love the jumbos on my irons but causing major probs with my driver and fairway woods so i going to switch back to small grips on them. but hey thats just me
Jumbo grips being heavier than standard grips will lower swingweight. Basic theory is that bigger grips stop the hands rotating and therefore increase the tendency to slice the ball however some people find that the larger grip reduces the tendency to grip too tight and actually allows the hands to release more freely i.e have the opposite effect. It all comes down to getting the correct size for you!
Correct, the jumbo grips are heavier and therefore reduce the swing weight of the club. And also true that in theory, you might have trouble rotateing your hands and you will leave the face open at impact. I tried jumbo grips and didnt' notice any problems with closing the club face. I have since pulled the grip, and if you are in the Auroar area of Colorado, I'd be happy to install one and let you see how you like them. I still have a few left in my shop if you want to try one. Let me know and we can set up a time to try it. Later, Don.
