I have a quick question. I have purchased Wilson Deep Red II Tour Irons new about 6 months ago and feel like I have gotten to the point where I can use them. Finally inspecting them I noticed on my 5 iron the ferrule facing the direction I am aiming (towards the flag) if that makes sense is chipped out at the bottom about 3/16 of an inch. Its not all the way thru the other side but about half the thickness deep of the ferrule. What i did was took some super glue, filled in the chip. Buffed smooth with dremel and painted the glue black. I was just wondering if that is fine what I did and will it prevent cracking of the ferrule in the future and will it cause any problems. I've never done clubsmithing before so worried alittle.
A ferrule is for the most part cosmetic on irons, especially steel iron shafts, if it bothers you at all, taking it to a clubmaker and having the shaft pulled and a new ferrule put on wouldn't cost much or take a clubmaker long to do.
I think I read in the past that a ferrule does serve a purpose of stabilizing the tip a bit, but I think it's more for graphite than for steel, for some reason...
Others more knowledgeable here can correct me if I'm wrong.
You are correct. A ferrule is purely a cosmetic detail. If it bothers you, you can sand it down with some acetone to make is look new. Or, as suggested, take it to a clubmaker and have it replaced. A ferrule is like $.35. But again, it will not do anything to the club to affect performance. Don't know if it will prevent cracking, but again, even if it does, don't worry about it.
Thank you I appreciate the help. You can barely notice it now after smoothing the glue out and painting it. I just wasn't sure about stabilizing the head of the club. What I will do is go out there and hit balls if it cracks it cracks no biggie :P
You didn't mention if you have steel or graphite shafts on your irons. If would be a good idea to have it fixed correctly if it's a graphite shaft, but not a big deal if you have steel shafts. The ferrule isn't just cosmetic, it does serve a purpose, it helps strengthen the joint at the top of the hosel and prevent the shaft from braking off at the top of the hosel. Again, this is more important with a graphite shaft, but it's still useful with a steel shaft. Depending on the clubhead, a ferrule can be a "required" part, not just a cosmetic option. you might want to contact Wilson and see what they tell you. Should be covered in the warrenty if they say it needs to be replaced.
Hi
One more post on this subject. I am a PCS Class A clubmaker so I know a little about the function of the ferrule. If you are ok witht the way it looks leave it, it's fine and will have no effect on the club it is purely cosmetic.
If it bothers you take it to a PCS clubmaker and have it repaired, I personally charge $10 for pulling and reinstalling and finishing a shaft.
Makes me feel better knowing that. I went out to the range this week and used them for the first time keeping an eye on my 5i. Didn't seem to affect it at all. Tell you what the Wilson Deep Red II Tours are a pretty big step from the Wal-mart Ram Traditionals
Every set of irons I've had (all steel shaft) seem to start losing ferrules within 3-4 rounds. My current set is missing the ferrule on the 6i, 8i, and PW, and the others are loose. The PW cracked when I struck a tree limb on a follow through, then eventually it came off, but I have no idea what happened with the others. I think it is mostly from bouncing around in the truck or when I put the club back into the bag without looking at how the other club heads are positioned. Never bothered getting one replaced, and it doesn't seem to affect the "performance" of the clubs. Of course, at my current level of play, any minute performance change would not be noticeable!
