ferrules- the purpose

....I try to learn all I can on any thing golf related. What exactly is the purpose of the ferrule on the shaft of the golf club? Is it to strengthen the point where the golf head and shaft are connected? , or is it cosmetic, just for looks ? thanks

A discussion of this was brought up not too long ago and I recall reading a post from one of our members (rehcoub, PCS Class A Clubmaker) that they are purely cosmetic.

I'm considering the art of clubmaking and have read that the purpose of the ferrule is to prevent the sharp edge of the hosel from cutting into the shaft (Graphite). The ferrule along with the proper application of EPoxy stabilizes the shaft and head which vibrates with every hit. This vibration will cause a ferrule-less clubhead to gnaw at the tip end of the shaft and its a matter of time before the shaft snaps at the hosel. This simple process is one that I thought I could depend on in-store clubmakers to properly execute. I was wrong and after several snapped heads I may as well give it a try myself. Hope this helps!

For the most part, ferrules serve no other purpose other than to give the clubs a clean finished look.

Cool

Some ferrules, like the ones used on Callaway irons, also help center the shaft in the hosel, and that's not something you want to ignore. And having a ferrule at the end of the hosel, makes a nice place for extra epoxy to stay in place and strengthen the joint. May not be a big deal with a steel shaft, but with a graphite shaft, it does reduce the chance that the shaft might break at the top of the hosel. When you consider that a ferrule costs about 30 cents, is it going to hurt anyone to use one and be sure the shaft is protected? Sorry to step on anyones toes, but at that price, I'm going to protect my investment, both my time and money spent on the shaft which cost me $97. If all it is, is a 30 cent insurance policy, then sign me up everytime.
