I just received a new putter as a gift (Rife 2 bar mallet). It's a 34 inch putter and I use a 33". I know it's only an inch but I'd like to shorten it. Can I do this without affecting the balance too much? This putter has adjustable weights already. Thanks for the help.
My brother got an inch off his putter when he got it, and it didn't affect weighting that much (if at all). I think swingweights are only important with all the other clubs, with which you take full swings and there are more variables in them to keep track of. For putters, it's pretty standard. Person A's putting stroke is going to be the same (or pretty darn close) as Person B's and likewise with Person C, and so on.
An inch isn't going to make a difference. Take it off of you need to. Simp
So true. An inch is cool, but two or more inches would and possibly could make a huge difference. A decade or so ago I had a decent 35" putter. I like short putters, so I cut off 2 inches. Well, there went the nice putter. The head was lighter than I imagined! Cut it to 33" and completely lost the feeling during the swing. Ended up being much too light at the bottom. Tried weighting it with lead weights but it was not the same club. So I gave it to my wife... and she still uses it!
OTOH, I cut an inch off a friends putter, re-gripped it and the dude is in 7th (green) heaven! He says it works better than the original.
I think a good bit of the success if that shorter putters 33" - 34" as most standard are 35" (still) allows for your arms to hang freely and you don't have to conform as much to the putter....I have mine at 32 1/2", although it's a very heavy clubhead at 400g...I still felt it was too light when I cut it down from 34" to 32 1/2" and put graphite powder and a 6g tungsten weight down the shaft and corked it...NOW IT'S A CHAMP for me!
Grips can be pulled if you'd like to keep the grip, I use a needle that injects solvent into the area between the grip/tape, it loosens the grip up and will slide off, others use air pressure to remove them but you have to be careful with that method too...mine is so that you don't stick yourself with the needle, but if you always have your opposite hand out of the way of the one injecting the solvent you won't jab yourself.
A clubmaker can do it for you as well for a nominal fee or free I'd imagine. Almost forgot, if you have a Winn grip or an older grip it may be more difficult to remove. Although Winn putter grips aren't as bad to remove as say a G7 or G8 club grip....the putter ones aren't that bad as I recall, been a while since I removed one of them.
I'll bet you anything you can't tell a bean's worth of difference in swing feel by cutting an inch off the top of a putter shaft. I have had several of my 35 inchers trimmed to 34 inches and the only thing I notice is that they fit me better. That little inch of tubular steel you remove weighs amost nothing to begin with. There is more difference in the weights of different brands of putter grips than the weight of that little amount of shaft you cut off.
I use Ping putters like scottsdale anser remake , seem when I cut it weight is affected, dont like to add to much weight, what is other alternative to adding weight.
