Shaft Length vs Stiffness ? Please help

I was fitted at a ping retailer and bought G5 irons. I usually need a regular shaft but as my new silver dots were plus 1 inch, fitter changed me to a stiff graphite. Does this make sense? I now want to buy a second set of pings on ebay. If I go with a steel shaft, plus 1 inch, should I also buy stiff? Also, there are more whites than silver. I am thinking of buying the ISI-K white and having the lie changed. Any advice is greatly appreciated. One last.....there are several sets that are plus 1/2 inch instead of plus 1 inch. Should I go for those? Can I lengthen? Thank you!

Cool

If you were fit by Ping and you are buying Ping, then by all means go with what you were recommended, stiff. Shouldn't make any difference, steel or graphite. As for buying 1/2 inch long, you could do that and extend the butt of the shaft another 1/2 inch later. Not a big deal. Golfsmith sells shaft extensions for a few dollars each, and you just remove the grip, epoxy in the extension, re-install the grip. All done. Whether you should do this, is a matter of how much the 1/2" longer set costs compared to the 1" longer set and how much the extensions cost plus labor.

Shaft Length vs. Stiffness

How are you hitting the new pings? If you are comfortable with them and hitting them good I would be hesitant to change anything. Longer shafts do change the flex, the longer they are the whippier they are and graphite tends to be whippier than steel.

If you go to an extra 1" to 1.5" over standard then the shaft is one going to play less then stated flex. So if you are playing an R at 38" inches and you go up to 39" then you are playing closer to an A (Senior) then you are a R.

I would not go with S-Flex at .5" over as that is not long enough to make a difference to the frequency of a shaft. May play to stiff for you.

If you buy the .5" over standards you can pull the grips and extend them to desired length and then put the grips back on for a pretty low price.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

Check out innovex golf, one of our sponsors. I think you will be pleasantly surprised out just how good a set of less expensive irons can be.
P.S. They are as close to custom fitted as you can get without visiting the pro.

If you are speaking of Clones it is hit or miss as some have very poor quality. The best thing to do is to go Component which is a company (like Innovex) that makes its own designs (with quality material).
