Taylor Made V Steel reshaft

I took out the metal shaft of a Taylor Made V steel and wanted to replace it with a graphite shaft. However, in the hosel of the head has a cylinder metal piece that looks like it fits inside of the metal shaft, but it is too big to fit inside of the graphite shaft. What is that metal piece and how can I remove it so that the graphite shaft will fit all the way in the hosel. Thanks in advance.
