Refinishing Older Persimmon Woods

I'd like to refinish some MacGregor Persimmons that I have and wonder if anyone has worked with wood woods lately? A couple questions I have would be:

1. Where can I buy the whipping that the hosel is wrapped with?
2. Any particular type of lacquer and stain that works best?

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks! Dave

My clubmaker refinishes them if you decide you don't want to do them yourself, let me know, he does great work too!

I'd like to give it a try myself. The clubs I'm talking about aren't worth much, so it would be somewhat of an experiment. Sure wish I could find a website or some forum where people share tips on how to work on older clubs. My latest question is whether a leather wrap grip can be removed and reinstalled.

If anyone has thoughts on this or the persimmon refinishing questions thanks in advance.

Dave

If the head has a plastic insert, it is usually made of cycolac, the material that plastic telephones were first made of. This is a very tough material, but be sure to remove the screws holding the insert on and remove the insert before you try to use any type of liquid finish remover, or your could damage or dissolve the insert. You can remove the metal sole insert as well, but be careful on any sanding with it removed, or it might not fit properly. It is usually better to buff and polish the head with the metal sole plate in place. Any good quality oil based stain should work well, with the color up to you. Use a couple of coats of a very high quality urethane gloss finish for the outer coat. The entire head is usually coated at one time, with the sole plate and the insert already installed. It's a lot of fun fooling with the older gear, and a real pleasure to go out and play with a persimmon club you have restored yourself. The older leather wraps are not going to come off very easily undamaged. There are new leather grips available on the internet that install just like all the other modern grips, so I would not worry about the old one.

Golfsmith restores old wooden clubs. They are usually more than willing with advice and they probably have what you need.

On the leather grips, it would probably depend on the condition. You can get new leather wrapped grips from Gripmaster USA on line.
