Difference between stainless steel materials?

What is the difference between the stainless steel materials used irons?

17-4 Steel

431 Steel

CMM (Cleveland uses)

or any other materials used in making today's irons.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each material.

Is one more forgiving then the other?

Thanks!

That is just a small few materials used in heads. I remember in a Golfsmith Catalogue seeing 2 dz different types of materials. Some are softer than others which will increase feel in a club and to be able to shape your shots easier due to the face gripping the ball better. I have a carbon material head which plays soft like blades even though it is a semi cavity. Pot metal used in some heads is very hard and little feel. But you will find these heads in stores like Big-5, Kmart type stores. You may want to search the Golfsmiths clubmaking website to find out more facts and materials on this subject.
