i think all the clubmakers are going to call me an idiot for this one and EVERY golfer on the boards is going to make fun of me but anyways...
i saw that tiger uses lead tape on the shaft of his driver to make it closer to the weight of his old steel shafted driver. that being said i am no tiger, but im 6'5" about 295 or 300lbs and consider myself to be a pretty athletic individual. i am currently playing a g2 with the stock aldila nv 65 stiff flex shaft. i am going to reshaft with a diamana 83 x flex, but until i save up the money for that i put 4 strips of lead tape on the shaft of my driver to give it more weight, each strip being 3.5 grams. i have gone to the range and hit balls and have not noticed any difference in the performance of my driver but i am wondering if this will have any adverse affects or maybe even help me. any thoughts from the gurus?
Back in the day I put tape on my wedge shaft to slow my tempo a little bit. It can affect the kick of a shaft depending on where you put it. I would imagine lower would kick the head more. I would ask a more qualified clubmaker about this. Custom Golf Sales has a few folks with GR. Maybe they can answer that one better. (not a dumb question at all)
I use lead tape on all of my woods, 3,5,7. I place it on the bottom near the hosel it promotes closing the face at impact. especially when hitting from deep rough. Wich tends to force the clubface open.
tiger puts tape just above the hosel and just below the grip on his driver. that is where i put the tape on mine. the weight feels ok and i feel like the ballflight is a little more consistent. i went out and played yesterday and didnt hit the driver that bad. drove to about 5 feet off the green of a 314 yard par 4. it probably would have made the green or gone over if it wasnt an elevated green. it just got stuck on the hill in the rough. kind of ticks me off because i have driven onto the fringe quite a few times but never seem to get that one last bounce to get on
From what I read that Tiger has a new shaft....a new Gaffalloy prototype bi-matrix with a steel tip...he uses it for control. He puts lead tape under the grip ...part of the tape sticks out from under the grip......to counter balance the shaft. You can see it in these pics.

He was talking about the shaft itself not where on the clubhead itself.
IMO, the G2 is not the ideal driver for a guy with an aggressive or hard swing. Some modifications are recommended because the G2 headweight is about 8gr lighter than most others. Many guys have been having success cutting it down and adding headweight. This will help the tempo and increase the number of on-center hits. So, when you install your new shaft you may want to think about adding a tip weight at that time..particularly if you have an athletic swing. Just a suggestion
i am actually thinking about going down and demoing a titleist 905r when it hits the stores, either that or a sq because i have read good things about it here. i have heard that about the g2 being lighter tho. any thoughts on the sq as far as the regular or tour version? scott1s?
The Tour has a deeper face for a lower ball flight. I got the SQ MAX because it face is not as deep as the tour for a higher launch angel and more distance.....espically with a Diamana shaft. They are high kick shafts and the ball will fly lower then most shafts. The SQ is much longer on miss hits then the 905R. The R also has the bore thru hosel with makes any shaft play stiffer and with less torque. I do not like the feel of a bore thru hoses. It makes it hard to figure out what the shaft is doing and you have to guess at the specs the shaft is playing at.
