I have a tp mills #6 putter and I am really considering taking it from 35 to 32 inches in length. I have played around with it by having my entire right hand below the grip and the left hand on the low part of the grip.(reverse grip) Putting this way in the house , has allowed me to feel the sweet spot pretty much everytime and I just feel more in control of the putter this way. I also see that the putter is in a more upright position, perhaps that is why I am getting solid contact.
I know this will effect the swing weight a bit and make the club feel different. So how much lead tape would you guys think it would need to get back to where it was. I will be adding a winn Ai excell putter grip to it once I am done.
Would I be ahead of just going the route of a 200 gram shaft?
I don't really care about the way it makes the putter look as long as it works. I am more into the score then the way my putter looks.
3" is a lot, but on a putter it wonj't be as noticable, use weight till it feel right, and you can off set some of the use of weight by using a lighter weight grip if you can find one you like
Try cutting one inch at a time. 3 inches may be too much, then you'll be out a nice putter.
If you want a short putter, try this on for size! Was searching around yahoo's golf section (golfonline.com)
and found this club from Nassau Golf... www.nassaugolf.com ...
there's more info on this putter in their website. http://www.pweputter.com/
I've never heard of them until now... anyone here use Nassau products??
I just had my 34" Ping shortened to 33". I was not comfortable with its length and now feel much better with it in my hands. I stand 5'6" how tall are you?? I agree with Billybogey5 3" may be much at one time.
I am 5' 10", Now that I have been looking at it more I may just go 2 inches. If I can figure out how them guys blow off grips with an air compressor I will go a little bit at a time. But I am buying a winn Ai grip so I don't want to be cutting that thing up again.
I used my technique on the course yesterday and my distance was way off. Repeatable but way off. Everything was going past the whole about 4-5 feet from all the sweet spot hits that I am not used to. So once I re-learn how hard to hit everything I know this is going to work out. I will be really happy if I cut down 5 or 6 putts from my game. Start makign more birdies instead of two putting for par from inside 10 feet.
Making that type of adjustment may result in your putter being too upright and causing you to dig the toe in the ground, depending on your stance. I cut 2" off my 2-Ball last year and had no problem though.
I ended up just cutting 2 inches off of it. Used an impact tape strip and I am keeping everything in a dime sized circle but still not hitting one spot all the time. Getting closer though. I am going to play around with the lead tape this weekend.
I do feel that the putter is more upright in regards to the heel of the putter and I think that helps me. When I was gripping way low on the putter it was really changing the angle and I hit the sweet spot more often. So for my type of stroke I must need a little more upright.
I cut three inches off my TaylorMade putter. Biggest problem I had was speed control on fast greens, slow greens were no problem. The solution was to bring the putter back to a D4 swingweight. This required lead in the shaft, and a ton of lead tape on the clubhead. There are pictures of it in the gallery.
Phil Mickelson uses a 32" putter and he is over 6'. It all comes down to you and what you want your arms to do. How they hang and is comfortable for you. Slowly add lead tape while putting on a green to get the feel you like.
I went to the course today and I am very pleased. Knocked all of them in from 5 feet and in..... and made one 12 footer to save par. I have not added any weight to the club as of yet, it feels great where it's at for now. the greens aren't very fast yet, and the practice green is really shaggy. After the round putted for about half hour , 3 footers 6 footers and 20 footers, didn't make any of the 20's but I had to blast it with how slow the greens are right now. I still don't know if its the shorter putter or all the balls I have been putting in my living room thats making me putt so well.
I am hoping this will last for a while. if anyone is looking at the winn Ai excel putter grip, I highly recommend it.
