Changing the grips on a new buddies clubs but the tape is really old and hard to remove... What are some old tricks to making that job a little easier than just trying to peel it off?

heat gun, I am in the same boat I am in the process of taking my grips off and the ones on the irons seem like they have glue under them. Its very hard. Just get the tape nice and warm and then it will get going. I used a butter knive to get the left over stuff that woulnd't budge.

Heat is the best way, those little butane torches work great, you just have to keep the flame moving back and forth so you don't ruin the shaft. They also sell scrapers made specifically for that purpose, if you have a golfsmith near you, they sell them for around $15.

Heat plus the tape remover would probably work best. If the shafts are graphite, don't use the heat. Be careful though. I prefer just taking the time to rub it off. I have worked up a nice callous on my thumb rubbing off grip tape.

Golfsmiths tape remover works ok, not great unless you add a lot of solvent. The same gripping solvent will help loosen the tape or simple rubbing alcohol on the shaft with a razor knife will do too.

Agree with the callouses getting the old tape off. Sometimes I apply a product called "goo gone" if the tape is really stubborn.

Also, for putting on the new grips, I use double sided tape that comes in a roll, and getting the tape to separate from the backing can be frustrating. I've had my fingers start to bleed after regripping a whole set of irons.
