irons are longer now

hi everyone , have you happen to notice that most of the new sets of irons
that have been produced by the majot conpanies in the past couple of years or so at standard lenght are approximately 3/4 in. longer than the old standard lenght? do you think that its because people are taller now or is it just away to increase distance or to give clubfitters more options? what do you think? mike

Irons have become longer and lofts have become stronger. That, coupled with new ball technology, has lengthened shots for most golfers.

I agree with all the stuff drstroud said, however I don't think it is because golfers are taller. I would guess its a ploy to make people think the new miracle irons have helped them hit the ball 15 yards further. The average golfer isn't going to realize that the club is a few degrees stronger, and 3/4" longer.

I wonder. They've made them longer and stronger lofts, so it would be reasonable to assume that a 3 and 4 iron are now harder to hit and control, so wa-la, let's sell everybody the hybrids. They are easier to hit and get decent distance.

it's all about money, money, and money.

marketing ploy to "increase distance" and profits.
same reasons why iron and wood lofts have gotten stonger over the years:
back when a pitching wedge had 50* loft, no one needed a "gap" or an '"approach" wedge.
no one needed "hybrids" either cause in circa 1950s, a 4-wood's loft (23*~25*) and length did the job when long irons were not appropriate.

me, i just want to play a "classic" game: not too much latest fad in technology, yet enough "technology" to take it easy...everyone has thier own balance point. I'd rather spend more money in lessons than in the latest wing ding clubs.
