Step Patterns

Is it possible to get an idea of flex from the step pattern on a shaft? I know a frequency meter is probably the best measure.

i'm not an expert, but i don't think you can. i believe the steps in a shaft are to help the shaft bend (flex) at certain points to give the shaft a particular flex consistancy that the manufacturer desired (ball flight, distance control), along with re-enforcing the shaft for solidity and stiffness(to a degree). you may find that many lighter shafts have more steps than a hevier shaft to help with stiffness so it could be possible to tell within that particular brand.
you'll also notice in the shaft specs on golfworks and golfsmith that the stiffer the shaft, the hevier it is by a few grams, in most brands meaning more metal. maybe some of our friends here may know more about this and enlighten us. mike
