Grip size question ?? .580 or .600 ??

Just wondering if anyone knew what the sizes were for standard grips. Golfsmith shows a .580 and a .600 in their Lamkin Crossline grips. I am going to order the grip kit and re-grip my irons, but I am not sure which is standard size .580 or .600 ???? Anyone know???????

.6oo is the standard size for mens grips. .580 are usually for women and junior shafts.

Based on the shaft in your signature, it should be .600

Chad,

That's a great question. Many people don't even think about grip size. Well here's my explanation:

As you already know, grip sizes come with varying core openings, ie; .580,
.600. Industry standard for Mens grips are .580, .600 and .620. Ladies grip core sizes are usually .560 and .580. Junior grips can vary beginning at .500.

The different sizes accomodate the butt size of the shaft ie; .580 grip on a
.580 butt end of the shaft.

In saying that, the true size of the grip is actually measured 2 inches from the edge (butt) of the grip. That standard measurement is .900. If you place a .580 grip on a .580 shaft the result is .900 standard. If you place a .600 grip on a .580 shaft, the result will be .880 which is about 1/64 undersize.

If you can, cut one grip off a club that you feel is the best fit for you. In most grips the size will be stamped on the underside toward the mouth of the grip. If you purchase that size grip, and you find after you re-grip the first club it's too small, start over and add a strip of buildup tape before applying the double sided tape.

Good luck!

Dang....I ordered the .580 grip kit tonight. O'well...I'll call tomorrow and get that changed. Thanks guys.

Raymon,

What is the calculation for figuring that .900 ???? I don't quite understand how you get a .900 from a .580 grip and shaft vs. a .880 when you combine the .600 grip and .580 shaft???? And what exactly is the measurement telling ??? ie; .900 of an inch or what???

I use a 0.580 on a 0.600 shaft, and I've no problems. Like yourself, I was worried about it before, but now I don't. Apparently, more club makers would be worried than DIY grippers.

A standard size grip is one that is 0.9 inches in diameter exactly 2" down from the grip cap. If someone specifically asks for thin grips or has extraordinary small hands, I make sure to use 0.6 grips. Otherwise, using 0.580 grips will do. Many clubs bought off the rack have slightly oversized grips since 0.580 shafts are a rarity. If you feel they are too large when you first install, you can quickly stretch the grip down the shaft to thin it out. Measure the length of your first grip installed so you will know how far stretch the subsequent grips

alright. I appreciate it. How do know you know what the butt thickness of your shafts are in order to know what grips to buy to achieve that .900 ???? I have Dynamic Gold True Temper S300 shafts in my irons if that helps or anybody knows that thickness.

.58 and .60 are not grip sizes. they are the core diameters of the grips. The first thing you need to do is measure your hand to find out what size grip you need. Measure from your wrist line to the tip of your middle finger. A length of 7 1/2" is standard. For every 1/4" smaller or larger is one size over or under standard. Aftre measuring your hand, you need to find out the diameter of your shafts. Most mens shafts are .600 but that is not standard, there are a lot of .58s, womens and juniors are .56. You can buy standard size grips with an inner core of .58 and .60 and both will have the same outer diameter.
Tell me the diameter of your shafts and your wrist to finger length and I can tell you what size your hand grip is and what size your grip should be. You may need to build up the diameter of your shafts if you have bigger than standard hands or you may have smaller than standard hands and need to make your grips smaller. I have a hand length of 7 1/4" which would put me one size under standard. To do this, I put a standard size grip with an inner core of .60 onto my shafts which are .58. this gives me a grip size of 1/64 under standard or one size under standard. There is more to replacing grips than just matching core size.
