Rusty club..

i bought a nike sand wedge and didn't know it was unfinished. Now everytime I play the next day it is covered in rust. Is there something I can put on it to keep it from rusting.

I had a post similar to this and nobody said anything. I went to Golfsmith and the manager (who was the only nice employee I've ever met at the one I go to) told me to scrub off the rust till all of it is gone with a green scrubby or steel wool and then spray it with wd 40 without wiping it, so that it penetrates the metal a bit and soaks in. Haven't seen rust on my irons since.

Thanks for the tip. I've got the same problem with one of my wedges. I'll give it a try.

if you have a problem getting the rust off, you can use the green scrubby that was mentioned or you can use tooth paste with the green scrubby to make it even easier. The tooth paste gets rust off like you would not believe

I use rem oil made for guns, for my gunmetal finish wedges., a guy on here a couple weeks ago who was a club builder, said not to use wd 40 on the gunmetal finish wedges, not sure if that's what the nike's are or not.

he said that because when you re-blue metal, blueing is actually a rust and wd40 would keep it from blueing properly. the reason they make raw finish clubs is to let them rust with the idea that the rust helps spin the ball. i have a clev. 60* which works quite well. the rust doesn't make it spin more, but keeps it consistant.

I was the one who said not to use WD40 on Gunmetal wedges. WD40 is a rust remover and will prematurely wear away the gunbluing(gunmetal). Gunbluing is actually a form of rust.

The reason the wedge is unfinished is so that it "will" rust. You want it to rust because the rust gives the wedge a rough surface which will help to grab the ball and put spin on it. There are players on tour who have wedge blades that are covered in rust. WD40 is ok to use to prevent your clubs from rusting, just dont use it on Gunmetal blades. The only thing I use WD40 for is to remove rusted on bolts.
