I am starting into clubmaking, and thus far have added butt extensions to a set of irons I purchased from a teaching pro. Eventually, I want to change the shafts, but am unsure of the best way to remove the head from the existing shaft. From what I have gathered already, you heat up the hosel of the club to break down the epoxy, and then use a shaft exractor to pull it out. My question is how do I heat the club head without causing damge or marring the finish in some way. Also, what is the proper way to clean the clubheads hosel bore, to make room for the new shaft. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as golfsmith only shows how to put new componants together.
clubs with a painted surface it's best to use a heat gun. some paints cannot handle any kind of flame if you get too close (cleveland). irons with steel shafts, i usually use a torch, much more efficient as long as you don't over heat and cause it to blue. irons with graghite shafts, its best to use a heat gun and use a torch only if it's being stubborn.
to clean the hosel, i first use a drill bit the just fits inside the hosel and with woods, make sure the hosel is pointing down will drilling it out so nothing gets inside the head if the plug comes out. i then use the sanding biit from golfworks to finish it. http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_CRMWC
hope this helps. mike
Do you know of the best place to get info on shaft diameters for OEM heads? Also, what is the difference with parallel and taper tip... how can tell with one I am supposed to use. Most manufacturers websites offer tip diameter, but i have yet to see them specify taper or parallel.
most of the time i get the diameters on oem heads from the pull-out shafts on ebay.
iron shafts: parallel tip are .370 in diameter and taper is always .355.
with taper tip most sets are pre cut tip wise and only butt cutting is needed. with parellel tip, it can be either pre cut or you cut then to stiffness and length.
