New club maker assembly questions?

Ok, I have all my components and I am ready to assemble my PureFit DC Tour V fairway wood.

This is my first ever club assembly so I have a few stupid questions for you pros out there.

I am using a recycled driver shaft (NV65s) that was cut off at the hosel and want to add a 9 gram Tungsten shaft weight while preserving the grip already installed on the shaft.

Do I need to epoxy in the tip weight and let that set up before I assemble the rest of the head, or can I get away with epoxying everything at once?

I am using the shaft fully inserted so I do not see how anything can move, but I am new to this and want to do things right

The hosel that came with the head is just a sleeve that rests against the opening of the head, can this just be slid up the shaft and epoxied in place last (or later) or should that be done at the same time the head is set?

I am making a 3 wood and want to end up somewhere around 42.5 inches, the insertion limit seems to be about an inch - when I dry fit everything last night the head seemed to add 2 inches to the total length so I am thinking if I cut the shaft just a bit under 41.5, the additional length with the tip weight and the length from the head itself less the insertion should put me near my 42.5 total.

You are not giving us much info to answer you correctly. You say that you are recycling the shaft, where did it come from? Another 3 wood or a driver? Shafts have to be tip cut to give you the proper stifness and flex. A brand new shaft would be left full length and each successive wood would be cut a half inch. Half inch for the 2 wood, an inch for a three, an inch and a half for a 4 wood and so on. You mention a sliding hosel, could this be the ferrule? You said the shaft was cut off at the hosel, there may have been too much cut off to make a proper 3 wood. To do this correctly, you will have to cut off the grip and install the shaft and then cut the shaft to length at the butt end, you dont cut from the tip to get the correct length. Anyway, everything can be epoxied at the same time. Give us a little more info about where the shaft was cut from so we can give you better advice.

i'm familiar with your suituation, the shaft is a nv65 stiff from a driver.

first, trainfever is right, do not cut from the tip, this will make the shaft extra stiff and boardy feeling. you're going to have to waste the grip to do this right and cut to length from the butt end.

second, as trainfever said, you can epoxy everything at once and make sure you sand the paint off the tip first before installing.

third, i'm not sure if this is the proper shaft weight due to the fact that it's taking a up a lot of hosel space that normaly the shaft would go into. an inch of shaft in the hosel may or may not hold up depending on how hard you swing the club. also, most aftermarket heads, many already have a closed face and now you are adding a draw bias into the head with the wieght at the heel of the head which may cause the ball to go left (draw) alot. only one way to find out. good luck. miike

Yes, it is more an experiment than anything. I had a driver with a cracked head, so I decided to try and make a 3 wood. I cut the shaft off at the hosel. The added weight was to compensate for the too-light shaft (for me anyway) and the added stiffness by tipping it so much. The idea being that the added head-weight would balance out the extra stiff shaft a bit (at least that id what I was told by some clubmakers). We'll see - I got it assembled to the length I was after - I'll take it to the range tomorrow to see what it can do.

Well, I made some rookie mistakes and gouged up the ferrule a bit getting everything together so it took a litt sandpaper and a sharpie to hide those marks.

But I hit 15-20 balls with it at the range and it performs pretty well. I was honestly waiting for the head to fly off during the first few swings.

The weight in the head was the right move for me, I hit a couple that rolled out near the 250 mark and hit it fairly straight. I few draws, a few fades - nothing really bad either way - about what I expect from a new club.

I don't know when I will try this again (I don't really have the tools or a place to work - I did this on the kitchen table with just a C clamp) but at least I know it is possible.
