Do you really need two sided tape?
Two sided masking tape seems to be really hard to come by in my country. If you can use standard masking tape when blowing grips on, why can't you use it when you're sliding them on? I get the impression the grip basically holds itself on anyway.
Is two sided tape really necessary?

Two sided tape is not necessary, you can use masking tape. Matter of fact, all I use is masking tape and contact/rubber cement to install grips. The club is usable in 10 minutes with this method.

If you're blowing grips on, you don't need any tape.

I know, so why do you need it using the traditional method?

It's just to get the grip started on the shaft. I only use about an inch and a half of tape when I put grips on and use mineral sprits.

When solvent hits the tape's glue, it becomes a lubricant and allows the grip to slide on.

I see. So it won't slide on properly with just regular tape and solvent?

To be honest, in 30+ years of doing this, I've never tried it.
