What is the general rule for shaft tiping?

I knew the answer for this a long time ago but I forgot. Was the general rule of thumb for tiping a shaft, 1 inch equates to + 1 flex

I.e. Tiping a S flex shaft 1 inch equals to near X flex or x flex.

I'm sure there are variables regarding shaft manufactures, but can someone confirm this? Thanks!

one inch will put you on the firmer side of stiff, depending on the shaft.

It depends on the shaft. Many of the shafts today specify "butt trim only."Your best bet is to contact the shaft manufacturer.

The Shaft is an Accra SC 75 M4 flex (stiff). Total length is 42.75. I got it off ebay for a good deal and couldn't refuse even if the flex was a bit softer. I'm just looking to get as close as I can to an X flex to compensate for my swing speed with the driver.

Anyone know anything about this shaft?

A question I have is at what length are you going to play the driver? My best guess is with that shaft in the Nike Sasquatch head, your final playing length will be somewhere around 44". If you tip trimmed the club an inch, it would result in a 43" driver.

Another thing to consider is how much of the tip was trimmed before you purchased the used shaft? If it were already tipped, the shaft may be close to an X anyway. At 42.75", it sounds like the shaft were removed from a 3-wood which would mean that the shaft was probably tipped already.

WOW! Yes, I play my driver at 43.75- 44 inches (42 inch shaft on the nike sq = total 44 inches). My average swing speed is rather high so I don't mind playing the shorter driver as I can put a more controlled swing on it (116 mph ave 121 mph max, anything over that everyone take cover). According to the seller, he said the shaft was NOT tipped. I should get the shaft tomorrow so I will take a look at it. If I'm not mistaken, the Accra SC 75 is a low spin high kick point shaft so it should play pretty stiff as it is for a S flex.

Consult the manufacturer's website for trimming instructions. They are ALL different.
