Hello All,
This is my first post here. I just took up golf in May and I play at least once a week. I bought my clubs used. My irons are Taylormade Firesole tours, they a great irons but are not forgiving at all. I am 6' tall but I have trouble getting down because I am pretty thick and not felxible. My Instructor told me to get my clubs lengthened 1" and get my lie adjusted. I got my lie adjusted at the local golf shop to +2 up. I installed the extensions and new grips myself. Well once I did this I said heck I can probably build golf clubs, heck I built RC planes for years so I know how to work with tools and epoxy.
I just recently purchased a SV2 OS #6 iron assembled to see if I liked them, I do. So I purchased a whole set of head 3-pw and a set or TT Command shafts. Well I can't seem to find anything out about them as far as how well they play and so forth. I bought them not because I couldn't afford better shafts but because I did not want to sink a whole lot of money into my first set. I have the Golfsmith clubmaking book and have read numerous how-tos on the web.
I can't wait for everything to arrive, but just to settle my curiosity are the TT shafts decent enough to play around with or did I waste my money.
Check http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_TT201103 as they carry the 'Command' shaft. Not an expensive steel shaft, $4 as opposed to a $10 'Dynamic Gold'. I just built my brother a set (11) of irons with the 'True Temper' shaft that has the red and black label. I found out the shaft I used started out just the same as the 'Dynamic Gold' and 'Dynamic' label and is only separated from those lines lines because of weight and step pattern. I weighed the 11 shafts I bought and found they were all within 2 grams of each other and slightly heavier than the 'Dynamic' lines. Use it, you will probably not notice a difference. Most OEM clubs that come with TT shafts that are not 'Dynamic' or 'Dynamic Gold" are most likely the 'Command' or 'True Temper' labled shafts. I have a few TaylorMade woods like that.
Thanks for your response. My firesole irons have DGS300s on them. I saw the command shafts had a mid kick point which is what I was looking for as I wanted a higher trajectory thant the dynamic gold shafts.
Okay now I have another question. I had not thought about swingweighting before, but I have read a bit about it. My plan was to just build the irons, and then later play with the weight. Is this adviseable, I mean if all of the components are the same and I trim to stiff per the instructions they should all roughly weigh out about the same, right? wrong? I figure if I need them heavier I can pull the grips and lead powder them later, right?
you are right, the heads get slighty heavier the more loftier they are, 3 iron lightest to pitching wedge the heaviest, so when the correct length shafts are installed, the swing weight should be, in theory, close.
Well I got shipping notices on everything. It will all be here on Friday, hopefully they will be on the Drving Range Sunday afternoon. Since this is my first assembly, I will either come on here and be estatic or I will be on here begging for advice. Lol, Thanks Guys
Okay so I need help now. It seems that the shafts I got were just 40" long once I trimmed the tips on them it seems they are now standrad length. When put into the hosel they are all about 1" shorter than my current irons which are 1" over. I added extensions to my old ones, I though I wouldn't have to with these.
My question now is, the shafts are a little loose in the hosel not like wallering around but not super snug either. Is this normal will the eposy make up for the rest?
After further review, they are actually 1" shorter than standard. Is it okay to use a 2" extension?
The shafts I bought came 40" long. Using a standard 5 iron is 38", their tip cut sheet says to cut 4" off for stiff flex. Once inserted into the hosel after tipping the shaft my total length is 37".
Is this normal or is there something screwy about the deal I got. Sound like I bought factory rejects or something. I would assume using their cut sheet for stiff flex the end result should at least be a standard length club.
RC; you stated that the shafts were 40 inches when you got them, and now that you trimmed them and inserted them into the clubheads, the clubs are 1 inch under starnard length. If that's correct, the only thing I can say is "You cut too much off each of those shafts some where along the line. Next time you think about building a set of irons, you might want to tip trim only one shaft and dry assemble it in the head you trimmed it for and check on the overall length of the club. Me, I never butt trim a shaft until I dry assemble the club and measure it for length. Then I can mark each club and butt trim as needed.
As for swing weight, you "could" get lucky and have all the swing weights come out the same and where you want them if you just assemble them without measureing the swing weight of each club. But I wouldn't "BET MONEY" on that happening. I've built clubs and when I dry fit them together, the swing weights varied as much as 2 points. That's not good enough for me, so I always check the swing weight of my clubs before I epoxy them together, and add lead to the tip of the shafts as needed to get all the swing weights the same before I epoxy anything. YES, you CAN, assemble all your clubs and check the swing weight after the fact. But why would you when you can check them before and match them all before you assemble them with epoxy and have installed the grips? I'd equate this to installing new spark plugs in your car, and starting it up, and if it doesn't run right, "Then you pull the plugs and "GAP" them. Why not "GAP" the plugs before you install them and do thing right?

the shafts from proshopwarehouse are an inch shorter than the shafts from golfworks or golfsmith. i don't know if they were seconds or not, but they sure have a lot of them.
there should be no problem with a 2 inch steel extension, but do yourself a favor and cut to length after the expoxy dries.
