Iron head refinishing

Anyone know where you can get a custom finish on irons (example: black oxid finish)?

Cool

What kind or irons? Stainless steel, or chrome plated forged? If they're plated forged irons, you have to have the plating removed and you can find a place that can do that in the phone book under "metal finishing". If you have stainless steel irons, again the same guys that do the "metal finishing" in the phone book is the place to look. Once the plating is off the forged irons, a local gunsmith should be able to blue the heads for you. It's called "blueing", but it's really a black finish. Either case the shafts have to be removed first, so figure on that adding to the cost.

As a gunsmith, I can tell you that the chrome has to be removed first. Gunbluing is just that, blue. There are new chemicals used and that is called gun black. If the heads are stainless, forget about it. stainless steel can not be blued. Be prepared to pay in excess of a hundred dollars because there is a lot of handwork involved, getting the metal ready for the bluing process. A lot of polishing. You could also do it yourself. First you have to get the heads down to bare metal. Then clean them, degrease them and then soak in a cold blue solution. Doesnt wear as well as hot bluing but then, you be scratching them up all the time anyway, and this way you could always touch them up yourself.

I've been shatfting my own clubs for the last 7 years so I'm ok on doing the work myself. I was going to re-shaft them with project X's anyway. I wanted to get a differnt finish on the irons as I'm not really into the chrome look anymore.

Taylormade RAC MB's are a coin forged metal. I'm assuing the chrome will come off, but i'd like to get a satin look on the finish. I did check out Nomad golf, but the price per club was kind of steep so I'm in debate. I could sell the set I have now and get a differnt set if i really wanted. Apprciate the help guys.
