repaint a driver?

Just bought a cleveland launcher with an Aldila NV shaft. The clubhead is a dark blue and the shaft is that bright green. What Id like to do is paint the crown a flat or matte black like the new hibore. Has anyone done this successfully? Any tips?

One thing I recommend...is if you're using paint and not powdercoating that you eploy an "idiot-line" on the crown.

Yep, like that NikeKid. Is that just rattle can or what? Is it softer than what is the factory coating? Does it scratch a lot easier? Yours looks to have turned out nice from the photos. Is it a metallic finish or is it a texture of some kind? Thanks!

If you don't want a textured finish, just use spray paint and then color sand with 1500 grit sand paper. This gets rid of the 'orange peel' texture from the spray can. Then buff with automotive polishing compound. Mine look OEM fresh now.

Re: repaint a driver?

If you want to go for the satin look and also have durability have a look at Durepox 2K primer (used in automotive painting) - it's an epoxy urethane and as hard as the hobs of **** ... also it is a very "thin" coating and won't add any significant weight to the head of your driver. (I used it when I refinished my TPM1 putter)
As an alternative you could get custom graphics airbrushed on then clear-coated over the top - would be a "1 off" then.

Re: repaint a driver?

I want to re-paint one of my drivers, for two reasons, It's a boring grey now, and I want to paint it a bright color. Candy Apple Red sounds good. Maybe with some 'flames' on top. Like all those hot rods with the flames shooting out the side of the engine compartment. A little weird, I agree, but it would be different. Who says drivers have to be black and boring? I want to remove all the old paint, polish the head as needed, and then paint it a new color. If you're interested, Golfsmith wrote an article on re-painting a driver. It tells you everything you need to know, and what tools you need. Quite a good article, well worth reading if you plan to give this a try.

Re: repaint a driver?

I think this is what indacup is referring to. See how, on the TM Rescue Dual, the paint doesn't go up to the front edge of the crown? Makes "idiot marks" a lot harder to make.

"The Ultimate Makeover", June 2007 issue of Golfsmith Clubmaker magazine.
You might be able to find the article on their website. If not, contact them and they should be able to send you a copy by email.

Golf Club Hospital

You can send your driver to these guys, and for about $40 they will do exactly what you're talking about. It's a great place, and i've had this done twice before there when i still lived in minnesota and couldn't have been happier with the outcome.

Re: repaint a driver?

If all you want is a dull top on your driver, you can get a spray can of flat black enamal and do it yourself for $3. Same day service too.
