Building clubs for a Behemoth

I am putting together a set for a friend that is 6 foot 5 and 270. I was wondering if anyone had used grip weights before to adjust swingweight. The club is longer than standard so even with the build up tape for the super jumbo grip I cant get the swingweight under D8. I have never had to add weight to the other end before and was wondering what the standard procedure was for the extra long clubs.

I would guess you would need to counter balance it. I know with my longer 48" shafts they are up in the E 7 E 8 range. It would take a lot to get the feel of a D3 or D4.

What Sw are you wanting to get to?

Okay... where to start. At what length did you build the 5i? If its 39" or over, D8 sounds pretty good to me. Did you fit him at that length? Did you measure his current set that he likes the length of? Are you making a super jumbo grip in part to lower the swingweight? Manipulating the grip to adjust for swingweight is not a real efficient practice. Does this gentleman have issues with a heavier swingweight? If so, are you sure that he needs rediculously long irons? I'm 6'4" and I play irons that are only 1/4" over std.

Swingweight is a 'lesser' fitting parameter. However, if the guy is an aggressive or a particularly hard swinger, a higher swingweight is generally desired.

I guess my question is... what exactly is driving you towards lowering the swingweight? Let us know a little more about the guy's swing and the specs on the irons you built him.. maybe we can help a little more.

My last thought is about backweighting. I have done 'repair' on a few guys' sets because their irons were in the E range and they were guys of smaller stature and complained of not being able to feel the clubhead. Other sets I've backweighted to improve ballstriking and feel. This could be a valid option here since you are thinking of bringing down the sw anyhow.

I made him a driver last year and it was a D2 to match his old set. I was just going to try to get the irons atleast within two swingweights of the driver.

If having a D8 swingweight on a set of long clubs isn't that unusual I guess I can go and let him try them. He is 1700 miles away and I am building him two different 3 irons to try. I am going to fit him long distance style, it is a birthday present. I just have never seen a swingweight over D6 in the books I have read and it is making me nervous.

yea man long drivers are way over D8. I have a 50" lda (48" usga) that with stock everything 66gram shaft , gp decade grip is E7. Feels fine too. I have D4 or D5 on my regular driver at 44 1/2" and I am going to add some lead tape to it this year to get it feeling heavier.
