How does swing weight affect the feel and performance characteristics of a club? What does a heavier swing weight do?
It is personal preference, but its also a point of reference for clubmakers. It is, in limited capacity, a fitting parameter. Impact tape will show different patterns for the same club at different swingweights. In general, stronger players will exhibit more control with higher swingweights. And obviously, women are fit with lighter swingweights.
FOr the 97% of the golfers that buy off the rack it really is a non-issue, although in half those cases it really should be. But, heck, thats the world we live in.

That's as good an explanation as I've heard. I've got a higher swing speed, and like to be able to "feel" the clubhead throughout the swing, so I prefer a higher swingweight. Up around an E-0, or E-1 seems to work best for me, so I "hot load" my woods. The irons, I seem to be happy with a D-1... Probably because I've never taken the time to experiment with anything different.

This is the part that I disagree with...a person will tend to develop "favorite" brands, when I have the feeling that it is a favorite swingweight as much as anything...for the most part off the rack most clubs are weighted about the same, but I remember when I first picked up a mizuno and felt the weight, and then fell in love with how much easier it seemed to swing...swingweight?

Please notice I said 1/2 of the golfers who buy off the rack, not all. It was meant as a smart-allecky remark, being that I am clubmaker, directed at those who drool over OEM and buy them off the rack because a pro "has validated" their use. Even though they are no where close to being the same clubs.
I make the analogy of a shoe store to some of my customers. When you buy your clubs at a mega-packaging store, its alot like going to into a shoe store that has beautiful shoes and large selection, except they are all the same size. Me saying that half the golfers that buy clubs that some old chinese woman assembled are fitted "good enough" is quite generous in my honest opinion. Another answer for those who are not in the know about components is that if you really wanted to emulate the pros, they should get their clubs fitted like the pros. This is the validation point. Yeah, Vijay uses a HiBore, but they are to his specs. Be like the pros... get fitted!
It comes down to the ole "component vs. OEM" argument. I always make the point that many just don't know what all high quality components have to offer... to no fault of their own.
