Ping G5 Shaft

I installed an Aldila NV MLT 85 38.5" graphite shaft in a G5 5 iron. Thinking that I would end up with 1/2" over-lenght. To the best of my knowledge the shaft bottomed out in the hosel however after the set up it measured 39.5".

Does Ping have a short hosel?

Should I instll a 37.5"?

tks

Okay,

First, when I think of a +1/2" 5i, I think of a 5i at 38.5". Now, your raw shaft already measures this length. Secondly, the vast majority of iron heads have a BBGM (bottom bore to Ground measurement) of either 1" or 1.25". This is the distance from the bottom of the shaft fully inserted to the ground. This is also how much longer the club will play than your raw shaft. Iron heads, such as Callaway, have a bore through hosel design. That means the BBGM is exactly 0". So if you installed your 38.5" 5i shaft in a Callaway, your 5i would be, indeed, +0.5" over length.

No need to call ping on this one. If your raw shaft was 38.5" and played 39.5", that means your BBGM is 1". "Does Ping have a short hosel" -- I'm not sure what that means, but you already know more interesting things than the length of the hosel. The BBGM is what is significant here, it determines how stiff the shaft will play in a head and it determines the length of the club with a certain shaft length. How long the hosel tube is is not in the least bit interesting, as far as playability of the club. Its only used to determine the approximate amount of shaft prep that is needed prior to install.

Cool

Sounds to me like all that needs fo be done here is cut an inch off the butt end of the shaft and it's at the length he wants. I've never installed a Aldila MLT shaft, but most all shafts come with trimming directions. Either the tip wasn't cut correctly, or the butt needs to be cut. With all the clubs I've built, I've never seen a shaft that didn't need to be "butt" trimmed to final playing length. Cut the butt off an inch and be done with it.
