You have a 17.5* 3 wood? That's a lot of loft for a 3 wood, I've never seen one with that much loft. To answer your question, it can be bent some, but I don't think you could bent it that much, and if you did, the sole of the club would not be at the correct angle and it would DIG into the ground big time. Why not use that 3 wood as a 5 wood and buy a new 3 wood with the loft you want? Or install a shaft with a high bend point and a stiffe tip to bring the launch angle down in the 3 wood you have? I think either option would be bettter than trying to bend the hosel of your 3 wood.
Thanks for responding. It's a Cobra M offset 3 wood, senior Mitsubishi Bassara shaft-43 inches, which is the only 17.5 degree 3 wood they make (I didn't pick that loft, discovered it on the website after hitting the club for a month or so). I have hit and owned dozens of 3 woods, and this is my absolute favorite club off the fairway (not the tee). It is not the loft (which doesn't hurt though), for me it is the ability to pick off the tightest of lies, and the shaft combination. I have tried their 15.5 offset 3 (comes with Aldila NV), not the same for me. It's weird since I have a 100 mph driver swing, use regular or stiff in everything else. But it's my favorite club, none close. Problem is it balloons a little too much into the wind here in Hawaii (great downwind), so I figured I'd get greedy, buy another one and have it bent to 13-14. If it could be done with reasonable liklihood of success I would do it within 2 days. Thanks.
wanted to keep this thread going- Any clubmakers comfortable with trying to turn a 17.5 degree club into 14 ??? If this is nutty idea, please say so, and will abandon and continue with 25 yard chips/pitches into the wind once in awhile.
It can't be done...well, at least, I don't know anyone that would even attempt it. You'd be hard pressed to be able to even bend a cast iron head that much. Generally, woods can only be bent for lie and face angle. You may be able to get someone to bend the loft 1 degree at most. Any more than that, the head will break.
With woods you can only bend the club open or closed, which changes the effective loft at impact (bending it open = decreasing effective loft, bending it closed = increasing effective loft). However, such an adjustment isn't the same as simply changing the loft on an iron. It would be hard to find a clubmaker who would do this, since there is great risk of ruining the club.
I have to wonder if it's not the shaft that you like so much about that 17.5* loft 3 wood. Why not see if they can make you a 3 wood with the loft you want with the same shaft as you have in this one? Let's face it, 17.5* loft is about normal for a 5 wood, not a 3 wood. My 5 wood is 18*'s.
I think the shaft has much to do with it. Bassara- Very light, seems to kick in right in synch with my swing for some reason even though a senior. However, the clubhead is unreal. It easily picks balls off the tightest of lies, does great thru rough, not too good off the tee but I almost never use it for that. It doesn't grab much if hit slightly behind ball. I honestly have owned or tried at least 30 3 woods (including just about every 2006 oem 3 wood) and this is the best for me, I can hit it 180 (high cut over a tree) to 225 or so, and work it. It kills my 3 5 woods (orlimar, Callaway and taylor made) in terms of picking off tight lies and ball flight. So I'm trying to get greedy and still get that 220+ into the wind, or more if needed. I'm sure there are other clubs/shaft combinations in 14 degree that would work, after several years and countless tries I have not found them.
Also, you may want to consider the length of your 3wd shaft which may be causing you trouble. The extra 1" on your 3wd may make it more difficult to control. I used to have a lot of difficulty hitting any 3wd off the deck (not a problem with a 5wd though) until I shortened my 3wd by 1/2". Now I'm a lot more consistent with it
