Replacing Grips ?

First of all I'm new to this forum, but I wanted to thank you all for all the advice I've been reading. I've got a Problem I think I'm in Canada and decided to regrip my Callaway X-18's this year. Well I approched golftown up here and they quoted me $13 a club for Grip (Golf Pride DDR) and install. Well times that by ten and I thought that it was a little pricey to do. So I searched out doing it myself, hence this forum. I found Golfsmith has a canadian website and proceeded to order 10 Grips, Solvent, 1" Tape, and a Vice holder. Started my task last night, cut off the old grip, put the tape on, applied the solvent and installed the new grip.... Did this on 2 clubs before I realized that I forgot to take the backer off of the 2 sided tape. For some reason I was thinking that it was Solvent activated tape (my bad, was a long day at the office yesturday) Anyways here's my breakdown of my clubs last night.

5 iron (left on tape backer when installing grip)

6 iron (see above)

7 iron (removed backer, but tape was a little lumpy, doesnt seem to affect my grip)

8 iron (see above)

9 iron (ran the tape in long strips from top to bottom, made for a very easy install)

PW (see above)

GW (see above)

SW (see above)

Anyways I tried to pull off the grip from 5 and 6 iron, they wont budge (so I'm wondering will they be ok for the season till I regrip next year) or does someone have advice on how to pull it off so I can reuse the grip?

next question, just to make sure I did it right,

Step 1 cut off old grip

Step 2 used heat gun, removed old tape

step 3 applied new tape (properly : )

step 4 used Solvent I bought from golfsmith (in grip and then applied from all over new tape)

Step 5 Rubbed solvent lightly over tape to make sure it was properly lubed

Step 6 Slide on new grip, then straightened it out.

Step 7 Let it sit over night.

I guess if you could supply some advice and comments I would appericate it.

Thanks Mr Winky

Cool Re: Replacing Grips ?

The grip with the paper still on the tape should be fine, The tape is only needed to be used with the solvent to make the grip slide on easy. If for some reason you feel a need to pull those two grips and remove the paper, you can use air pressure to blow into the end of the grip and slide it out. There is a whole discussion on this if you look for it a little bit. If it was my clubs, I'd just leave the grips alone. And next time, I'd recommend you get the 2 inch wide tape, it's easier to use.

Re: Replacing Grips ?

Thanks one putt, I feel like an idiot for not removing the tape backer, my wife even mentioned it when she helped me with the first one. I was just more concerned the club would fly out of the grip on the course is all.

Thanks Winky
