What's this called?

OK - thought I'd go to the clubmakers/repairers on this one. I bought some ping irons this spring and they have the brushed-like area on the groove section of the iron face (as do many other types of clubs out there). After some play it is beginning to wear where I consistently strike the ball. I was just wondering if (1)there is a term for this section of the face of the club, (2)if it's added material or just a brushed finish, and (3) after some time is there a way to take this finish off to improve the overall appearance of the face of the club (make it look uniform)? Sorry - snuck three questions in there! Thanks in advance.

Cool Re: What's this called?

I don't play Ping irons, so I don't know what your set is like, but a lot of irons the center section on the face is sand blasted fo give the ball a little more spin. Some others are machined in a way to leave the surface with shallow tool marks, again to add a bit of spin to the ball. Both will wear smooth over time, and there's not much you can do for the machine marks. If the face was sand blasted, that could be done again to return them to like new appearance. Any machince shop with a "bead blaster" can do this for you. Only for cast clubs, not forged by the way.

Re: What's this called?

Golfsmith and Golfworks both sell the media that is used to re-sandblast the face of golf clubheads. It has to be of a certain consistancy to keep the clubs within USGA specs.
