ladies flex steel shafts

Hello everyone, I'm new to clubmaking and just made my first set of irons and love them. Now I'm making a set for my wife. I got her the iron heads now I just need the shafts. I've been looking at the graphite shafts just because her current set has them. I just recently found some true temper steel shafts that come in a ladies flex for a really good price. I was just wondering if it would make a big difference if I got her the steel shafts instead of the graphite. Do you think she'll lose a lot of distance on her shots?

Re: ladies flex steel shafts

It really depends on how she swings and what kind of swing speed she generates.

If she's not real athletic (probably 80% of all women fit this) then she would likely benefit from lighter shafts -- either steel or graphite. There are some quite good graphite shafts for irons out there that are price competitive with good quality steel shafts. Also, most women I've built/fit clubs for appreciate the shock absorbing properties of graphite vs. steel.

On the other hand, if your wife is athletic and generates a lot of clubhead speed then steel and possibly even a stiffer flex might be in order.

If she's a beginner then I'd go with L flex and graphite, if possible.

Just out of curiosity which iron heads did you build for yourself and which heads did you buy for her clubs?

Re: ladies flex steel shafts

thanks for the info. I think it would be best to have her try out some steel shafts or maybe get her swing speed measured. I don't think she really has a slow swing speed she use to play softball.

I built some golfsmith jetsream irons with apollo shafts and lamkin grips

Golfsmith.com: Golfsmith Jetstream Iron Head - Golfsmith

I got her some xpc sapphire iron heads

Do you know where I can get some good quality graphite iron shafts at a good price

Re: ladies flex steel shafts

Most of the cheaper steel shafts out there are not in the light-weight category.

What model shaft can you get this deal on?

A 120 gram steel shaft will be a definite distance killer versus an 80 gram graphite shaft.

Re: ladies flex steel shafts

About 8 years back, I bought a couple of Paragon graphite shafts for a driver, and a 5 wood. I was pleasantly surprised. The driver shaft was perfect for me, and though a different model shaft, so was the one I put in the 5 wood.
Don't take that to mean they make great shafts now, but several years ago, I was happy with their products. Hopefully, things haven't changed.

They are decent shafts, especially for the price. Much better than the cheap OEM shafts you'll typically find in women's "starter" sets.

As long as you are looking at Golfsmith, check out their Carbon Stick shafts. When I talked to the clubmaker customer service guy early this year he told me they are made by UST for them. I built a set of irons with them this past winter and I'm very happy with the performance.
